ScriptTank 10 July – ‘Powers That Be’ by Melville Lovatt

ScriptTank on 10 July will be hearing (potentially) two new stage plays by Melville Lovatt: The Powers That Be and a short work entitled The Kiss.

The Powers That Be

Matt and Gary are minding a man and awaiting instructions from the powers that be. Instructions which will decide the man’s fate, and also, unbeknown to Gary, his own. For Gary, the time has finally come to prove himself to the powers that be. It’s an aptitude test of some kind, that’s all.

If time allows on the night, we may also hear Melville’s short piece The Kiss.

The Kiss

After seeing them kissing, Simon is convinced his wife, Sonya, is having an affair with his best friend, Clive. The kiss triggers in Simon a desire for revenge, bringing into sharp focus the fragile boundaries of friendship. Beneath seemingly inconsequential conversation, a darker narrative begins to unfold which leads to an ironic, ambiguous conclusion.

The reading is being held on the night of a World Cup semi-final, but we hope you can make it no matter which teams are playing that evening.

We have one more reading confirmed for next week on 17 July. After that, ScriptTank will be taking its summer vacation and will return in the autumn.

15 May – Sponges by Urszula Kucharczyk

The next reading a ScriptTank will be the play Sponges – a comedy-drama written by one of our newest members Urszula Kucharczyk.
Agata, Sylwia and Helena are Polish immigrants, living in Manchester and working in a factory: Ahata is a machine operator, while Sylwia and Helena pack sponges. When Agata is promoted to team leader she is conflicted at first, but she tries to use her position to improve working conditions for her friends. And she learns Helena is to be sacked, she starts fighting to save her friend… This play asks, how do you live when you have been robbed of your dreams?
Please come along and show your support next Tuesday, 15 May.
After this reading, ScriptTank will be taking a short break, as our venue will not be available over Ramadan.

1 May – ‘May Day’ Shorts Night

On the 1st May – May Day bank holiday – ScriptTank will be holding one of our occasional Shorts Nights.

If you have a short piece of work – such as a short film, an extract from a full script, or a treatment or outline for a new performance work – you can have it read out.

Unlike a regular meeting, you don’t need to have to come to at least three meetings to have something read on a Shorts Night. So if you’re new to ScriptTank and want to dip your toes in the waters of criticism, this is the time to do it.

If you have a short piece you’d like read, please send an email to Katharine. Include the name of the piece, the medium it is for (theatre, radio, film or TV), and its casting needs (performing ages of the characters, and how many male and female actors the script requires).

Pieces must be no longer than 10 minutes long when read out (about 10 pages for a correctly formatted script).

(Please note, the date given for this reading in the ScriptTank newsletter was incorrect. Sorry for the confusion.)
